Notes
- At his attestation in 1916 he was described as:
5 foot 5 and a quarter inches tall, dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.
His right second finger was missing, and he was tatooed on both forearsm, his right having a lady's head, clasped hands and a butterfly, his left having a ladies head, ship and butterfly. - James had the following description from his declaration of intent to become a US citizen in 1921 (aged 40):
White, medium complexion 5 feet five and half inches tall. Weight 156 pounds, hair brown - turning grey, eyes brown.
Second finger of right hand missing. Tattoo marks on both wrists and butterfly on back of each hand.
