Married Thomas George GAY in ,London.21

Emma Kinman was recorded as a widow, the daughter of Charles Chaproniere an officer in the East India Service when she married Thomas Gay on February the 28th at Barts the Great. Claiming to be a widow at that time is slighty bending the truth as her husband John did not actually die until September of that year. It would appear that for some time she was technically a bigamist, if indeed she and John were legally married in the first place (no marriage record has yet been found).

Thomas was a widower of full age, working as a tailor.  His father was George Gay, also a tailor.  The address given for both parties was 17 New Street.

Emma signed and Thomas made his mark. The witnesses were Franz Hoffman and Charlotte Hart.

Other facts

Married John KINMAN

Emma's age, and consequently the parentage of John Kinman junior, is uncertain. Like many her age is inconsistent from one census to the next, but the various ages given are largely in agreement with a birth of around 1822 - which ties with her age stated on the GRO death index.

However, there are baptisms for several children of Charles and Georgina Chaproniere, including one Amelia, born 10 May 1814, baptised 26 May 1814 at the British Lying in Hospital. Charles' profession is given as being "E Indian", i.e. employed by the East India Company and the abode is interestingly stated to be Fleet Prison.

It is possible that Emma is a later addition to the family, carrying the name of a possibly deceased elder sister. Alternatively she may be the same person as Amelia and she didn't know or simply made up her age.

If the former then Emma was 9 years old when John junior was born, if the latter she would have been 17 and so possibly John junior's mother.

Notes

  • Emma Amelia Gay died of "Natural spacin[g] of heart - 4 hours" on the 4th December 1887.  She is recorded as being 65 years old and the widow of ______ Gay a Paper Stainer, something of a combination of her two previous husbands, John Kinman being a paper stainer and Thomas Gay being a tailor. An inquest was held on the 7th December in Westminster.
