  • Alumni Oxoniensis:

Kingsman, William, son of Timothy, cleric.  MERTON COLLEGE, matriculated 11 July 1690, BA 1694, MA 1697.  Rector of Sherfield English 1707 and of West Tytherley, Hampshire 1709.

This is incorrect in that William did not become Rector of West Tytherley until after the death of his brother John in 1723.

On a notice at Sherfield English Church, listing the incumbents, it shows that William was instituted on 17th October 1707 and that his patron was Edward Keel.  He was succeded at Sherfield English by Richard Budden in 1737.

    Summary of his Will:

William Kingsman of the town of Southampton, clerk.  Will dated 27 June 1728.

To the testators four children Sarah, Elizabeth, William and Margaret ?400 each at their ages of 21 years, and if either dies under that age then ?400 equally between the survivors.  Daughter Sarah to have the ?30 with interest at 4 percent from the time of her birth being the legacy given to her by her Godfather the late Primate of Ireland, and they are all to have at their ages of 21 years the pieces of plate or gifts in money that have been given and set aside for them.  Wife Sarah residuary legatee and executrix.

Proved at London 8 June 1737, by Sarah his wife, relict and sole executrix.

Witnesses:  Christopher Fleet, John Henrtridge and Mary Holland

Anglican Primates of Ireland (candidates for Godfather):

    1703 - 1713 Narcissus Marsh
    1714 - 1724 Thomas Lindsay

Marsh was born in Wiltshire and was lecturing in Oxford in 1690 when William was at Merton, so is the more likely candidate.
