Notes

  • Mary Ann Kingsman arrived in Australia on the "Earl of Elgin" which left Liverpool 12th April 1853 and arrived in Sydney 26th July 1853.  A family story says that she met George Seeds on this voyage and that he was the Captain of the ship (which he was not, although he was a seaman).  Mary Ann was recorded as being 24 years old, a housemaid of Clerkenwell, London.  She was the daughter of William Long and Mary Ann Kingsman, living at Clerkenwell.  Church of England, could read and write.  She had three cousins in Sydney, one named Evans [Elizabeth Kingsman married James Thomas Evans] living in George Street.  Paid ?1.

From Mariner Tong, first published on ancestry.com:

A family tradition amongst the descendants of Mary and George Seeds has it that Mary Ann Kingsman married one of the crew of the "Earl of Elgin" and had migrated to Sydney with a female friend or relative.  The two women are also said to have set up a dressmaking business. (Mrs.Brady's information.)  A conjecture based on this is only a guess but it is not impossible that Mary Ann Benson, Mary Ann Seeds or the Evans family got together and later set up business in Sydney.  The Evans in Sydney lived in George Street, which is about a mile from Woolloomooloo according to a street map.  (Frank Jesse Kingsman's conjecture.)
