Notes

  • The 1539 muster of North Wiltshire records no Franklin males in the parishes of Kennett or Overton. Although possible that ages could fall outside of the muster requirements, this is strong evidence that the Frankilns were not originally of this area and migrated in sometime in the mid 16th century.

  • House of Commons 1509-1558, by S T Bindhoff, Appendix of Members: biography of Geoffrey Daniell (MP for Devizes 1545). [Google Books]:

In his will [dated 1558, probate 1561] he left 400 sheep to his wife "in the care of her son-in-law Thomas Franklin of Pulton". He also left his interests in three manors in Monmouthshire to Bridget Franklin, daughter of Richard Franklin of Overton, who he made executor of his will. His overseers were John Ernely of Bishops Cannings (father of William Ernely who later married Bridget) and Robert Kingsmill.

  • A History of the County of Wiltshire, by Crowley, available on the British History Online website, talking about the manor of East Kennett:

"......A fourth royal grant was made in 1553 to William Herbert, Earl of Pembroke. Pembroke sold the manor in 1563 to Richard Franklin (d. 1597) who was succeeded by his son Richard (d. 1634) and grandson William Franklin. William Norden (d. 1638) purchased the manor in 1637 ....."

  • At the 1565 Visitation of the Heralds Richard Franklin of Overton "disclaimed the name of Gentleman" - i.e. he made no claim of the right to bear arms.

  • In 1588 Richard entered into a marriage agreement with Robert Kingsman of Overton,  exchanging 2 acres of arable land and rights to one fifth of the common pasture of East Kennett for the sum of ?10. Logically this should be for a marriage of a daughter of Richard Franklin to a son (probably Robert) of Robert Kingsman.
