Notes

  • In 1596 Richard Franklin leased the manor of Overton from the Earl of Pembroke for the three lives of himself, Ann Franklin and William Franklin.

    Inquisition at Marlborough (ex ancestry.com):

    19 May 1628

Richard Edward Francklin to be awarded premises for his heirs forever.  Given to him by both Richard Giles Francklin [his father] and Robert Kingsman snr.

A History of the County of Wiltshire, by Crowley, available on the British History Online website, talking about the priory of St Margaret and East Kennett church:

"In 1383 the priory of St. Margaret was licensed to appropriate East Kennett church which it retained until the Dissolution. The rectory estate was held by the Crown until 1550 when it was granted to Sir William Herbert (created earl of Pembroke in 1551). Pembroke apparently sold it with the manor to Richard Franklin (d. 1597). Richard Franklin (d. 1634) devised it to his daughters Joyce and Cecily, who conveyed it to Richard Brownjohn in 1637."

In his will Richard left bequests to his daughters Cicely and Joyce (unmarried in 1634), to the children of his daughters Ann and Mary, and to his son Edward, who he made executor.

The witnesses to the will were John Smythe, Robert Kingsman (senior) and Robert Kingsman (junior).
