...Miss Louisa Langlois, Master Arthur Langlois, Mr W W Kingsman...
[Daily Southern Cross, Volume XXXI, Issue 5632, 30 September 1875, Page 2] - 25th December 1875, Isabella Langlois (born c1843) a widow married William W Kingsman in Auckland, New Zealand. The previous day the couple made a settlement to each other that Isabella's property of 2 rented houses in Walworth and a house in Walworth for her own means left in the will of her first husband would remain her property and not become William's property. No trustee to this settlement was appointed.
Previous to this, rent on these properties had been collected by William's father by arrangement with Mr Langlois. He had taken a percentage and forwarded the balance.
Mr Langlois left a will and William's father and Isabella Langlois were co-trustees of it.
After the marriage William's father failed to pay a portion of the money collected on the two houses which totalled ?104 4s 6d. His argument was that he was being paid as a trustee and that Isabella could not give a receipt.
Isabella (now Kingsman) was deserted by her husband and, on 14th April 1877 obtained an order from a magistrate in Auckland, New Zealand. This order was to protect her property and earnings acquired from her husband - the order being back dated to her marriage.
Isabella came back to England on 24th August 1878 and didn't know where her husband was and wanted to claim the money due her from his father. Hence the Court of Appeal, Kingsman vs. Kingsman.
She won in the end and costs were awarded against William's father.
In the 1881 census, Isabella Kingsman aged 38, married, born Walworth was living with her son Arthur Langlois (aged 19, a builder, born Walworth) at 82 Alvey Road, Newington. - 4th February 1876

[Auckland Star, Volume VIL, Issue 1862, 4 February 1876, Page 3] - Angela Clarke passed on notes from Ernest Kingsman (junior) who said that George Henry Kingsman (brother to Walter) emigrated to Fiji. It would appear from newspaper reports that this i slightly misplaced family lore and it was Walter who went there, by way of New Zealand and his failed relationship with Isabella [Knell] Langlois.
- 2 February 1881
From a newspaper report of the trial and appeal case concerning Isabella [Knell] Langlois and the Kingsman family:
....The marriage was duly solemnised...and almost immediately after the marriage Mr Kingman deserted hs wife, and is now supposed to be at the Fiji Islands, never having contributed anything towards her maintenance since she became his wife....
