Will of Richard Staley, Goldsmith of London. 1686.

In the name of God Amen.

I Richard Staley, Goldsmith and citizen of London, being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory for which I praise Almighty God do make and ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say,

First and principally I commend my soul into the Almighty power and goodness of God that gave it hoping through the merits infinite of the holy Jesus to have all my sins pardon and my soul made eternally happy 

And for my body I commit the disposal all that to my dear wife whom I shall hereafter name my executrix 

And as touching the disposition of all such temporal estate as it hath pleased the giver of all good things to bestow upon me I give and dispose thereof as followeth:

First, I will that my debts and funeral charges shall be honestly paid and discharged 

Item, I give and bequeath unto my sister Elizabeth Staley (after the death of my said dear wife) and not before) all my lands and tenements being and lyeing in the town and parish of Cheshunt in the county of Hartfordshire for and during the natural life of her my said sister, and to her heirs either male or female on her body lawfully to be begotten and after her death and for want of such issue then I give and bequeath the said premises to said sisters Susannah Houseman and Mary Bird, widows equally between them during their joint and natural lives and after the decease of either of them then to the longer liver of them and to the heirs either male or female lawfully to be begotten on the body of such longer liver of said sisters and after their death and for want of such issue, then I give and bequeath the same unto Edward Burdette of Grays Inn in the county of Middlesex Esquire the heirs, executors, administrators and assigns forever. 

And for all the rest and residue of my estate and estates either real or personal, Land Tenements and hereditaments, goods and chattels whatsoever I do give and bequeath unto my said dear wife Beatrix Staley whom I do here make and ordain my full and sole executor of this my Last Will and Testament. 

And I do hereby revoke, disannul and make void all former Wills and Testaments by me heretofor made. 

In witness whereof, I the said Richard Staley to this my Last Will and Testament have set my hand and seal this 3rd day of September 1685 in the first year of the reign of our sovereign lord James the Second of England, Scotland, France and Ireland King ect.
