Will of Richard Batt of Devizes. 1569


In the Name of God Amen : the twelfth day of May Anno 1568

I Richard Batt of the town of the Devizes being sick of body but whole and perfect mind and of good remembrance do make and ordain my last will and testament in manner and form following


First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God and my body to be buried within my parish church of Saint John the Baptist in the Devizes aforesaid


Item I give and bequeath unto Joanne Whittacre my daughter all my lands in Westbury for term of her life and twenty pounds in money


Item I give and bequeath unto John the son of Agnes Whittocke commonly known and called by the name of John Batt my house that I dwell in and all that I have therein moveable and unmoveable 


Item I give and bequeath to Richard Wyllies my godson the house that Robert Haseland holdeth of mine forever to remain to the said Richard and his heirs forever 


Item I give and bequeath to Mary Willies one part of a house that is mine in Saint Mary’s parish now in the tenure of Henry Smythe to her and her heirs forever


Item I give and bequeath to Joanne Whittacre the daughter of Richard Whittacre five pounds to be paid at the day of her marriage 


Item I give and bequeath unto Thomas Whittacre the son of Richard Whittacre five pounds to be paid him at the age of one and twenty years 


Item I give and bequeath unto Richard Whittacre my godson one house in Westbury now in the tenure of Mr Bennett now vicar of Westbury after the decease of my daughter Joanne 


Item I give and bequeath unto Agnes Duffelde my sister’s daughter 20 shillings and a flock bed 


Item I give Elianor Tucker my servant 20 shillings 


Item I give and bequeath to the forsaid John Whittock also Batt my house at the town end that Robert Marchant now dwelleth in and also one house in the tenure of Robert Sutton to him and to his heirs forever 


Item I give and bequeath unto Edward Whittacre one tenement in Westbury now in the tenure of one Owen a glover there to remain to the said Edward and his heirs forever after the decease of my daughter Joanne 


Item I give and bequeath unto the poor people within the Devizes 20 dozen of bread 


Item I give and bequeath unto the said John Whittock also Batt mine executor my three houses in Westbury now in the tenure of one Grene and Thomas Hedge tenants unto the same houses to the said John and his heirs forever 


All the residue of any goods unbequeathed in whose hands soever they be I give and bequeath unto the said John Whittock also Batt whom I make my whole executor to see my body brought in earth and all my legacies to be levied and paid 


and finally my overseers Mr Henry Grubbe mayor and Master Morris and Mr Willes
