Will of John Kyngesman of Great Braxted (Church Braxted), Essex. 1553.

Dated 1st Sep 1553

Will of John Kyngesman of Great Braxted

This will appears to be written in his own hand and is very difficult to read.

The first two pages are very difficult to read, but the overall gist is that he leaves various parcels of land (described) to his sons, Thomas, John and Benjamin in that order.

Thomas is obviously the eldest, he seems to get more land than the others but is also charged with paying some sum due to Grace for the term of her life (Grace is not directly identified, but is most likely John Kyngesman’s mother)  This sum is either £10 or £13 6s 8d dependant on a condition laid upon Grace.  This charge has a restriction – “but only to take timber from the underwood for payment”

Pages 3 & 4 are somewhat easier to follow as they fall more in line with a typical will:

To Thomas my son, £13 6s 8d to be paid at age 21

To John my son, £13 6s 8d to be paid at age aforesaid

To Benjamin my son, £13 6s 8d to be paid at age aforesaid

To my child not yet born £13 6s 8d if it be a boy other wise £10

If any of these do not reach the age of 21 then their gift to be shared equally among the others

To Margaret my daughter, £10 at 22 years

To Judith my daughter, £10 at age aforesaid

To Elizabeth my daughter, £10 at age aforesaid

If any of these do not reach the age of 22 then their gift to be shared equally among the others

I wish that Margaret my wife, if she shall marry, be bound unto my brother Raynold (this might be Richard)

My brother Raynold to be overseer
