Will of John Kyngesman, yeoman of Althorne, Essex. 1512.


In the Name of God Amen.
The 9th day of the month of January in the year of Our Lord God 1512, I John Kyngesman of Althorne in the County of Essex, yeoman, being in good and whole mind, thanked be God, make and ordain this my present testament and last will in manner and form following, that is to say:


First, I bequeath and recommend my soul to Almighty God my Maker and Saviour, to his blessed mother Mary the Virgin, and to all the Saints in Heaven. My body to be buried in the Church of Saint Andrew in Althorne afore the Naturntie of our Lady at the north side of the Chancell door.


Item, I bequeath for the breaking of the ground of the Church priest 6 shillings 8 pence.


Item, I bequeath to the high alter for my tithes and oblations forgotten or negligently witholden in discharging of my soul 13 shillings 4 pence.


Item, I give to the vicar of the same Church for my foredroxe 2 mother ewes.


Item, I bequeath to every parish Church within the Hundred of Deyngye 3 shillings 4 pence to be delivered to the Church Wardens praying them to pray for my soul. 


Item, I bequeath to Laexkynge Chapel 20 pence.


Item, to Mary Magdelene Chapel 20 pence. 


Item, I bequeath to Beligh Abbey 20 shillings and to every priest from the same place 4 pence.


Item, I bequeath to the Friars of Maldon 10 shillings.


Item, to the Friars of Chelmsford 10 shillings. 


Item, to the poor plate of Friars of Colchester 10 shillings.


Item, I bequeath out of a parcel of land called South Heydones for my soul half yearly to be spent in bread, ale and cheese 4 shillings. 


Item, to the vicar of the same Church for Mass and dirges 8 pence.


Item, I bequeath to the vicar to pray for me in the bederoll 4 pence.


Item, to my well disposed priests 2 shillings, every priest 6 pence.


Item, to my Clerks 8 pence, every Clerk 8 pence.


Item, to my Childern 4 pence.


Item, to the Church Wardens yearly for their labour 8 pence.


Item, to the Sexton for ringing to the Dirge and seylinge of the Presst 8 pence.


The residue I bequeath to the most needful works of the same Church praying you that be present to see it done.


Also, I will that  there be ordained a well disposed priest immediately after my departing to sing for me one year, he to have for his wages £6 13s 4d.


Also, I will that Alice my wife have all my tenements called Wodhins Preyers and Spilmans term of her life and after the decease of her all the tenements in Wodham Ferys I will that they be sold by my executor and immediately after it is sold for the souls of John and Alice my wife father and mother and I will be ordained a well disposed priest to sing 3 years he to have for his wages £20.


Also, to the Church of Wodham Ferys when the land is sold 40 shillings.


Item, out of the said land to be spent in highway betwixt Althorne Church and at first at the parish goeth to Burham Wards where it is most wide £7, and in the highway betwixt Strinfold Gate and Alardes farm  to Maldon Ward in sand and gravel £7 out of the same land.


I give to Margaret my daughter £10 if she be alive when the land is sold, if she be dead any child of her to have a part of the same £10.


Also, I bequeath to Alice my wife a tent called Pagetts, which I dwell in for term of her life after the decease of her I will that John my son have it to his heirs and assigns.


Also, I will that Alice my wife and John my son have a farm called Freyerns and Jakeletts with all the cattle that is thereon for term of their lives.


Also, I will that Alice my wife have all the movables of my household farm save only that is nailed fast that is a quirne bedstead and a press.


Also, I will that Alice my wife have in ready money £40.


Also, I will that Margaret my daughter have in ready money £10.


Also, I will that Margaret my daughter have a tenement called Stondons in Burnham otherwise called Shep Wrights and Bevesse in Southminster, after the decease of her I will that my godson John her son the oldest have Bevesse and my godson John her son the youngest have Stondons.  Also, if the one die the other to have both the foresaid tenements, and if they both be dead to remain to the brethren and sisters that be alive. 


Also, I will that John my son have a tenement called Walshes to his heirs and assigns lying in the parish of Steple Assheldon and Stanysgate


Also, I wish that John my son have a parcel of indenture land holden of the Abbot of Tolteys lying in the parish of Stepel called Geners for term of the years.


Also, I will that  John my son have a tenement called Shepkotts being and lying in the parish of Drywhith to his heirs and assigns.


Also, I will that John my son have a tenement called Woliners lying in the parish of Althorne to his heirs and assigns.


Also, I will that there be spent in costs at the day of my burial £4 and at the month day £5. 


Also, I will and bequeath to the making of a Tabernacle of King Harry to stand in the North window and to make a standing for Saint George to be voide from the light beam 4 more


Also, I will and bequeath to the painting of the middle part of the light beam in the best manner £4. 


Also, I will that Alice my wife have out of Pottynge five score (100) sheep.


Item, I bequeath to Robert Wade out of Pottynge five score (100) sheep.


Item, I will that Margaret my daughter have out of Pottynge ten score (200)  sheep to be delivered at arighelinat next totond


Also, I will that my cousin John Kyngesman have a croft immediately after my departing called Rocheford and 20 shillings in ready money.

Also, I will that my cousin Sadlingford have 6s 8d.


Item, to his sister 6s 8d.


Item, I bequeath to Grace Stanes 3s 4d. 


Item, I bequeath to Johane Bisshopes 20 pence. 


Also, I will that every godson that I have, have 8 pence.


Also, I will and make John my son my executor and Thomas Porsote and John Carreston and John Kynge to be my overseers and each one of them to have for their labour 40 pence and if they bid their costs paid for. 


My debts paid and my will fulfilled. 


The residue of my goods not bequeathed I will that John my son have them.
